SIU's Correctional Medicine joins DoD Skillbridge program

The Office of Correctional Medicine at SIU School of Medicine has joined the U.S. Department of Defense SkillBridge Program as an industry partner, creating new opportunities for transitioning service members and military spouses.


SkillBridge connects retiring and transitioning service members, as well as military spouses, with industry partners that offer civilian work experience through specialized training, apprenticeships or internships during the final 180 days of military service. Participants continue to receive military compensation and benefits while gaining hands-on experience in civilian career fields. Industry partners benefit by welcoming a highly trained and motivated workforce at no cost.


DeFraties“This partnership strengthens our commitment to supporting those who have served our country,” said Dawn DeFraties, executive director of correctional medicine at SIU School of Medicine. “Service members bring leadership, accountability and technical expertise, making them valuable additions to our teams.”


By joining SkillBridge, SIU School of Medicine expands career pathways for military personnel while strengthening the health care workforce. SIU School of Medicine joins leading institutions such as Harvard University, Vanderbilt University, Clemson University, the University of Iowa and the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research in partnering with SkillBridge.
